Course Reflection

To begin I just want to say how valuable this course was for me as a future educator. I came in green to the ideas of video creating, screen capture, and assessment. This first semester in the program has been a great stepping stone for me to dive in to the objectives needed to be learned to do my job to the utmost of my ability. My three biggest takeaways from this course are: 1) the importance of technology for classroom engagement, 2) being aware of the amount of resources at our disposal, and 3) the diversity at which how students retain knowledge. To elaborate on this, I don’t remember much technology being used in high school 10 years ago when I attended. Also, cell phones weren’t as main stream yet which kept the distractions down from the level they’re at today. With that said, keeping students engaged in content with the use of media platforms seems to be at a premium in education today. The resources at hand are beyond anything I thought possible for educators. Whether it be through the school system itself such as ALEX, or it be through Pinterest or even teacherspayteacher.com. There are numerous ways to expand our variety in how to help our kids learn. Then there was the different learning theories and methods at which to go about teaching the necessary standards. Whether it being Web 2.0 or 3.0, the students will most certainly have a vast difference in retain on the individual level with respect to which is used. As human beings we’re all so unique. This course has given a look at how relevant this is in education.

As nerve wracking as it was at the time my favorite assignment has ended up being the video creation. It took a level of comfort to evaluate myself speaking and how I wanted to introduce myself. The fact that I took public speaking many moons definitely was a eye opener and it showed me how important these presenting skills were to being a teacher. Then to add on to this the iMovie app was so easy to edit. It was basically a start to show that all these things you think take a lot of time to do and polish are much more accessible now. This could be used for subs when a day is missed as easy as making a video and attaching it to a link of the schools “Sakai like” site engage. I saw much of this video creation tool use in classrooms during observation and I completely understand why after producing my own.

So, to answer the question, “what are two ways I plan on implementing technology in my class then what I would have done prior to taking this course?”. I had never seen moodlecloud before even though I understand the concept is used in many ways. So without deep diving into this I would say this would be a useful tool for study guides for students. I would suggest some sort of technique to avoid divide and conquer or even some students in groups not participating. But overall the idea of safe shared knowledge is amazing to have. I would have never considered using things such as Powtoons as attention grabbers before this class. While creating my cartoon for that weeks assignment the idea just seemed so cool to have for rules and such to post examples using this. Also, I would of course thought of using PowerPoint, but I had never been introduced to screen-casting before. The fact that I could break down a lesson for subs or pre-make commentary for my presentations is a very useful tool to have my disposal. Even using it and posting my lessons on the site for students who are absent can give them the ability to not get far behind saving time in class for instruction. Ever since observing the screen-cast option I’ve used it several times to break down film for players post practice.

To conclude I just want to thank you Dr. Gaston for the tools that have been left for our disposal. Of course I won’t be able to implement all of these at once or maybe not even in my career, but just having the know how that there are always more options out there for the betterment of students is peace of mind.

Lesson Tool

I chose to use Gooru as my lesson tool. Going into this assignment I thought I would be writing out what all was being taught throughout that day of the unit. This tool was more geared towards presenting the questions to students in a untraditional fashion. Rather than using paper worksheets the questions are presented through this program along with choices of answer types: free response, multiple choice, true/false, etc. An issue from the start was this was my first time seeing NextGenScience objectives. This is my first semester as an education student so I’m only vaguely familiar with our own Alabama standards. Also, once I began typing my questions it kept resetting the standard to nothing and wouldn’t allow me to edit that part of the lesson (which is why it says none haha). What it boils down to is this tool is useful for a lesson plan that is drawn out with questions is various places. If students have access to technology then they could all answer the questions here to get quick data on understanding. From what I see it’s not a must have for a lesson but it could be helpful in big classrooms.

Digital Storytelling

I began this assignment by downloading Screencast-O-Matic. The program did not seem to want to function with my laptop because every time I tried doing the task with it I sounded like Bane (Batman villain). So, I jumped over to PowerPoint and the assignment went smoothly from this point. This tool is fantastic to where you could prepare looking through things ahead of time and pause while doing things that maybe you see as a waste of class time. Also love the video editing that PowerPoint allows. Eventually I will have to give Screen-O-Matic another shot with different hardware.

Visual Creation

gradessss  OpenGym

I started off by just doing a simple flyer which would fall into the realistic category for it being a photograph. I used Canva for this and it was easy to use. Google led me to it btw. Simple and straight to the point, a way to show that there’s open gym with a bit of spark.

The link marked as “gradessss” (sorry about that) is a representation of participation grade with letter grade. I feel it’s important to make it obvious throughout the semester to let the students know that how much they participate with have a major effect on the grade they end up with in the class. This would fall into organization since a chart was used to represent the data. I also used Canva for this.

Lastly, I tried out Toondoo to see what all the buzz was about from my Google search. I started out making an attempt at a transformational toon, but I was much more limited with characters than expected. So I went abstract as a drawing to give students an idea of how important the Bellringer is. It comes first as soon as we enter and time is limited. (My clock didn’t add) ;(cool-cartoon-11936494

Firstly, I must apologize for my late post this week. Insane week at work of people leaving and having to train new folks… blah blah we all have lives so no need to listen to me blabber on about how busy I am. This was a step out of the ole comfort zone to say the least, but once it was done it felt amazing. The ease of creating this through iMovie was even easier than had been described to me (which I was told it’s like using word). The only issue I came across was when I went to cut pieces of my video I had issues getting small parts out. That’s why looking back I would stop and start way more times than I initially did. Also, the music was a bit loud towards the end of mine or maybe my voice wasn’t loud enough so I spent some time trying to cut that out. Overall, it was fun honestly. Probably one of the more enjoyable things I’ve done during my first semester of graduate school.

Web-based Learning Tools

Video link per Biteable https://biteable.com/watch/presentation-1b-1762334

https://biteable.com/

I decided to use Biteable for my product because most importantly it was free. No typing in the credit card number for me! Also, once I started to dive in to creating it I noticed how simple the process was. It starts you off with basically a slideshow at the bottom. You are then able to edit each slide with different animation and such. An issue that was hard for me to adjust to was the maximum of 80 letters per slide. Since it feels like a PowerPoint I found myself struggling to condense my message per animation. This was my first attempt at doing anything of this nature so the lack of time I had (since I waited until Tuesday to start -_-) to do this assignment hurt in my ability to really dive in to the content on the site. The idea of adding audio as well as video clips to my own built film is pretty remarkable to me that it’s as easy as this site makes it. I also created a TeacherTube account. An issue I came across was since I didn’t pay for premium membership at Biteable, I couldn’t download the video the upload it. In the future I’ll decide which of the tools I like using best and buy the membership. With so much creativity that could go into this I truly believe this could be of use in the classroom. Something different is always engaging to at minimum the attention level of students. In terms of obstacles I faced while doing this assignment, finding exactly what Web 3.0 tools are used in the classroom took me a bit of digging to find ( maybe I missed it in the text?). I used a Pinterest page of an educator where she had posted numerous tools that come from Web 3.0. Thanks community! (2.0 reference) … Basically what this assignment opened me up to was the ease that user generated content can be produced. Going beyond the slideshow era and doing something that could be considered “new”. I look forward to my next opportunity to use this tool and will make sure I have more than 6 hours to play with. *Inserts classical music into product*

Matrix Process

To start I’ll say that this is my first experience with using a blog. The confusion was real when it kept asking me what I wanted to name my site, but finally I skipped around enough to get here to make my post. This was also my first go at creating a matrix. I can’t describe how thankful I am for google and its seamless instructions on how to access SmartArt, etc. From there I used Chapter 2 from the book and the PowerPoint provided to create the information for the matrix except for the examples. I looked around online for some ideas at first because I was struggling to connect these theories with the classroom. This is tied to me not having any experience in one yet outside of me being a student. After some deliberation I came up with what I thought to be worthy examples. A challenge for me was trying to see how these theories could benefit a student in a secondary environment off the top of my head. I’m hoping these ideas come more fluid with practice. These theories will be greatly beneficial for me because these are researched methods behind how to help students retain information. Which as educators is the number one goal, to give students the base for lifelong learning.
